Early this April, the government laid out a new scheme called Connect to Work, an employment programme providing help to those with barriers to employment get into and stay in work. It is estimated that over 100,000 people annually will be supported into work nationally as a result of the scheme. West London is the first area where the new programme is being implemented, with £42.8 million being invested to support 3,500 disabled people and people with health conditions each year into new positions.
I am proud that the Connect to Work scheme directly addresses the Government’s goal to kickstart economic growth, creating a more inclusive economy for everyone to get into, stay into and thrive in the work they do. In the UK, there are 1.9 million people who want to work but are unable to – often due to health issues or disability. The reform brought about by these measures will build a platform for people who want to get into work to secure employment, regardless of the challenges they face, getting Britain working again as part of Labour’s Plan for Change.
I also welcome the support that Connect to Work will provide for the people of Hounslow. On 1st May 2025, the West London Alliance (WLA) officially launched the new government service, covering Hounslow, Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hammersmith and Fulham, Brent and Barnet. This will support 10,800 local residents to find meaningful employment through the Connect to Work initiative brought about by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liz Kendall MP. With this new programme, essential skills training, careers advice and mental health support will be delivered to the people that need it most to unlock their potential and add to the progress of our nation.

As a nation, it is important that we improve productivity in every corner of our country. I am pleased that the first step towards forming the foundation of our economic prosperity is being taken in our community, expanding employment opportunity to all.
