Last week, I sent a joint letter with Ruth Cadbury MP to the Department of Education highlighting the challenges that nurseries have been facing in Hounslow. Nursery staff perform a vital role in our community, but they have not received enough support from the Government during this pandemic. Nursery staff have experienced poor access to rapid lateral flow testing and to vaccines making me incredibly concerned about the struggles that both owners and managers of nursery businesses and their staff are facing.

I have called on the Government to provide better and more long-term leadership and support to our local nurseries. Nurseries play a crucial role in raising the next generation of our children and allow for parents and families in Hounslow to return to employment. I also urged the Department of Education to provide greater clarity and guidance. With this level of uncertainty and confusion from the Government, businesses and educational establishments in Hounslow cannot plan and operate in advance.

The early years of a child’s life are very important and from birth to age 5, a child’s brain develops more than at any other time in life. Nurseries and early year education is an important stage for children where they can flourish and get the best start in life and so I look forward to continuing to work with our wonderful nurseries to ensure that children in Hounslow are kept safe, happy and are provided with the best care.
