As the impact of Covid-19 spreads, I understand the concern that will be felt in our constituency and across the country. The latest advice from the Government is that anyone who thinks they may have symptoms of coronavirus, notably a new, continuous cough or a high temperature, should stay at home for at least 7 days however mild the symptoms are.

If you live with other people, they should stay at home for 14 days from the day the first person displays symptoms.

I would encourage everyone to read and follow the Government’s latest guidance on coronavirus: https://www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/coronavirus-covid-19-uk-government-response

You can find out more information on Hounslow Borough Council’s website, including guidance for employers and businesses: https://www.hounslow.gov.uk/coronavirus

As of 9am on 18 March 2020, 56,221 people have been tested in the UK, of which 53,595 were confirmed negative and 2,626 were confirmed positive. I sympathise profoundly with the families of those who have lost loved ones, as well as all other individuals who have tested positive for coronavirus. I am also immensely grateful to all our NHS staff and social care workers who are working tirelessly to help deal with this crisis.

I support the Government’s move to bring forward emergency legislation to ensure the best possible response. However, I do believe more needs to be done with extending statutory sick pay, universal credit and support for the self-employed. I have been and will continue to raise these issues with Ministers in order to support local people and businesses.

I will follow developments in this area closely and work with the Government to ensure that public health and safety remains the top priority.

It is heartening to see so many community groups and residents looking out for one another and offering support to people who are vulnerable. Please do let me know of any local initiatives helping people throughout this time, which I can support and promote further.

Please remember to stay safe, wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds with handwash, avoid touching your face and wipe down mobile phones, door handles and other surfaces regularly.

My team and I remain available to help anyone during this difficult time. You can get in touch with us on seema.malhotra.mp@parliament.uk if you have any issues we can help with.
