Today, in front of Exiting the European Union Select Committee, David Davis said that Parliament could vote on the final Brexit deal after March 2019.  Seema Malhotra MP, Member of Exiting the EU Select Committee, said that would mean the Government are treating Parliament with “contempt”.

Seema Malhotra, Labour and Cooperative MP for Feltham and Heston, said: “Yet again the Government is treating parliamentary democracy with contempt. Time and time again they are desperate to avoid scrutiny. We were promised a “meaningful” vote on the deal, it beggars belief that it may well come after we leave the European Union.”

Labour’s shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer said: “David Davis’ comments add to the confusion and chaos over the Government’s approach to the Brexit negotiations. Labour has been clear from the outset that Parliament must have the final say on the terms of Britain’s exit from the European Union before March 2019. The Brexit Secretary must urgently clarify his comments and accept Parliament will not be side-lined.”

In an exchange later the same day under points of order, Seema Malhotra MP secured an acknowledgement from Mr Speaker Bercow that it was “customary” for any change to the government’s position to be subject to an oral statement.
