Seema Malhotra MP, Member of Parliament for Feltham and Heston, has called for an emergency debate on Feltham Young Offenders Institute in the House of Commons given the HM Chief Inspector of Prisons report and today’s High Court ruling on Feltham Young Offenders Institution.

Seema Malhotra, MP for Feltham and Heston in which the prison is located, says:

“Today’s breaking news that a 16 year old boy has had his human rights breached through being kept in prolonged solitary confinement and being unlawfully denied access to education and the ability to mix with other inmates, shows the government must act now. This is a dereliction of duty.

“Young people are coming out of our youth justice institutions more traumatized and with reduced life chances than when they went in. We are supposed to be an advanced society. These are children and their future and welfare should be a matter for urgent debate of this house.

“Following the Speaker’s recommendation, I will be seeking a full debate in Parliament.”

Seema Malhotra MP has written to the Justice Secretary and relevant Justice ministers, the Education Secretary (in light of the concerns raised about education at the prison), the Chief Executive Officer of HM Prisons and Probation Service and the Governor of the prison.
